Saturday Morning Bike Ride

Happy Sunday!

Things have been crazy in the Moellering household.  In the last few weeks Ray has been traveling a ton for work,  I had to travel for work, we had 6 visitors, and we cooked our first Thanksgiving meal. My schedule is starting to slow down and I finally feel like things are starting to get back to normal.

Ray, on the other hand, is still really busy and has lots of travel scheduled in the next few months. I think he will be traveling more than he will be home. Ray left for New York today and since we didn’t have any pressing plans yesterday we decided to take Cooper for a bike ride and grab breakfast at Pannikin Coffee & Tea.  Ray has been working with Cooper for the last few months to teach him how to run next to him on the bike. The first few times he attempted to bike ride with Cooper it was a little bit of a disaster.  However, they have definitely gotten the hang of it.

Cooper has a ton of energy and taking him on a bike ride is a great way to tire him out and plus he loves it. Whenever he sees Ray get the bikes out of the garage he gets super excited and his tail starts wagging  like crazy. The weather was so nice yesterday in San Diego and it was great to be able to sit outside at Pannikin and enjoy the sun, good food, coffee, and conversation.  When we got home from our bike ride Cooper was pretty exhausted and curled up on the couch and went to sleep.

Our Saturday morning was very relaxing unlike our previous one.  Last Saturday Ray and I decided to get up early and run to the gym and pick up breakfast and coffee. When we came home we walked in and  found quite a surprise!

We decided to leave Cooper in the house (usually he goes in the backyard) since he was sleeping quietly on the couch, but it seems Cooper woke up and got bored and decided to attack our couch pillow.  Luckily, he managed to unzip the pillow and remove all of the stuffing! He didn’t rip the outside so we were able to save the pillow and it is as good as new (just a little on the  lumpy side)!

Flawed & Fabulous

Last Saturday my friend, Julia, and I took a Hot Power Fusion class at CorePower Yoga in Mission Valley.  The instructor, Viktoria, was awesome and told us some funny stories and inspiring quotes throughout the class. One of the things that Viktoria said was, “you need to learn to love yourself including your flaws because flaws are what make us human and who says you can’t be flawed and fabulous.”

What she said really resonated with me and was the inspiration for this post. Looking back on the last two weeks I  have had some epic fails and some great accomplishments.

Epic Fails

Last Thursday Ray went to the grocery store and bought stuff to make chicken sausage hotdogs and roasted brussels sprouts. By the time we got home from work I was too exhausted to cook the brussels sprouts, which was my only responsibility for dinner. It took some time, but I convinced Ray that we should get burritos from Rubio’s instead of cooking. We unpacked the groceries that Ray had just bought for dinner, got take out, and sat on the couch and watched tv.

During a recent trip to the grocery store I almost lost my cell phone. I put it down when I was trying to choose an avocado and walked away without picking it back up. After I completed my grocery shopping, I went to grab my phone to make sure I had gotten everything on my list and realized I had no phone! I went into panic mode and started to sweat.  I walked though the store and visited all the places I had just been, but there was no sign of my phone. Luckily, a good Samaritan had picked my phone up and turned it into the lost and found and I got it back! Huge sigh of relief.

My running shoes have not been getting enough use lately! I didn’t meet my running goal for the Pile on the Miles Challenge last week.

Cooper also gets an epic fail. He stole scissors from the kitchen table and Ray found him walking around the living room with them in his mouth (luckily he was chewing the handle side). Ray and I are quickly learning that now that Cooper is bigger there are no safe places to hide things from him. Some how he is able to get into everything.

Cooper epic fail

Last Tuesday I pushed myself pretty hard during a strength training workout and mastered a new move: the reverse burpee. It is a lot harder than it looks! If you were like me and didn’t know there was such thing as a reverse burpee check it out:

Organizing our closest has been on my to-do list for over a month and last Sunday I finally did it. Our closet is pretty small so things can get messy quickly. I went through all of our clothes and cleared out the items we don’t wear anymore and straighten up the clothes we were keeping. Now I just need to make a trip to Goodwill to donate the items we don’t want anymore.

Cooper made cleaning out the closet a little challenging. He kept stealing clothes and taking them in the living room to chew.

Since I didn’t run at all last week I wanted to make running a priority this week and on Monday I ran my fastest 5k. I ran it in 27 minutes and 10 seconds.

Besides making me reflect at some of my not so finer moments and some things I have accomplished lately, what Viktoria said also reminded me of some of the struggles I faced early on when I was trying to get back into shape. At first I was really hard on myself when I did not stick to my workout plan or when I gave into my unhealthy food cravings. However as my journey to lose weight and get back into shape continued, I discovered you have to give yourself a break and realized that every week is not going to be perfect. You will make mistakes and there will be times where you make no progress towards your goal or even go backwards. The important thing is to keep moving forward, not to get discouraged, and to focus on the progress you have made and the things you have accomplished. I found that once I stopped putting so much pressure on myself,  I started to relax and enjoy the process of getting back into shape instead of dreading it.

Trader Joe’s Favorites

I don’t frequent Trader Joe’s very often because there is not a store conveniently located to my house.  A few times a month I take classes from CorePower Yoga in Pacific Beach, which is down the street from a Trader Joe’s. There are a few items from Trader Joe’s that I love so it always a treat when I have time to swing by and grab them.

Dried Apricots

apricotsRay was the one to introduce me to these and now I am addicted to them (notice how the bag is half gone after only a day of getting them). Earlier this year Ray and I went on a 20 mile roundtrip backpacking trip and while we were shopping for our trip he suggested we get them. I gave him a bad time about wanting to get them because I didn’t think they looked very good and they were heavy, which for a backpacking trip is not good. Oh boy was I wrong! These dried apricots came in handy on our backpacking trip so many times. They were the perfect snack when I needed an extra boast of energy and were super tasty.  In case you didn’t know, dried apricots are a great source of fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, and Iron (Ray also informed me of that ;-)).

Luna Bars

White Chocolate Macadamia is my favorite Luna bar flavor. I buy these bars in bulk and keep a stash of them in my desk at work.  I usually eat a Luna bar at the end of my work day if I am planning on heading straight to the gym. They give me the extra energy I need to get through my work out after a long day at work.

Trader Joe’s Hummus Dip

Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips

I recently discovered Trader Joe’s Sweet Potato Tortilla Chips. I am usually not a fan of sweet potatoes not even sweet potato fries (and I love fries) but for some reason I really like these chips. I love dipping them into the Trader Joe’s hummus dip!

Mandarin Orange Chicken

Cooper and Chicken

Ray and I (and Cooper) love this frozen meal. The chicken is really good and is super easy and quick to make. I usually cook the Mandarin Orange Chicken following the oven directions  and pair it with brown rice and broccoli.  While I was taking this picture Cooper snagged the bag of chicken and ran around the house with it in his mouth. Never a dull a moment in our house!

Mochi Ice Cream Balls

mochiI tried these Mochi Ice Cream Balls at my friend’s house and the next day I made a special trip to Trader Joe’s to get them. They are so good! When I am craving something sweet these totally hit the spot. The best part is that each Mochi Ice Cream Ball only has a 100 calories in it.

Saturday Morning Breakfast

During the work week my mornings are usually pretty rushed, which is my own fault. I am always running around like a crazy person trying to get ready for work and out the door on time. I am not the type of person that hears their alarm in the morning and  jumps right out of bed. Instead I hit the snooze button over and over again so I can sleep until the last possible second. I am not the only one who struggles with getting up in the morning…Cooper is pretty bad too!

In my rush to get ready in the morning, I never have time to cook myself breakfast. Ray has been encouraging me for years to try and get up earlier so I can have enough time to get ready without rushing and have breakfast at home. I know he is right, but I can’t seem to resist the urge to hit the snooze button! I may not wake up with enough time to cook breakfast, but I do always manage to make coffee in the morning. My coffee cup pretty much sums up my feelings on the necessity of starting your day with coffee!

During the work week breakfast for me usually involves grabbing something as I run out the door that I can either eat in my car or at my desk. Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day since it gets your metabolism going, so even though I eat breakfast on the go most mornings, I still try to ensure it is nutritious and filling.

Some of my favorite breakfasts to eat on the go are:

– Greek Yogurt with fruit and granola
– Whole wheat toast with peanut butter and a side of strawberries and bananas
– Rolled up whole wheat tortilla (heated up) with peanut butter and honey
– Instant Oatmeal with a scoop of peanut butter and nuts mixed in. I have to add some protein to my oatmeal otherwise it doesn’t fill me up and I am hungry an hour later

Today, I decided to take advantage of the fact that I did not have anywhere to be and cooked a hot breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast.

In a small bowl I added two eggs, a dash of pepper, a dash of garlic salt and a small amount of water and mixed everything together. I poured the mixture in a skillet and cooked on the stove with low to medium heat. Once the egg mixture started cooking, I added small pieces of ham for a little extra protein.

After my scrambled eggs were done, I sprinkled a little pepper jack cheese on them and toasted a piece of whole wheat sourdough toast.

It was delicious!

Breakfast is an important meal and shouldn’t be skipped.  I find that eating a  good breakfast is the best deterrent for unhealthy “grazing”  I sometimes do throughout the day.

Maybe this week I will try and get up at least one day with enough time to cook and eat breakfast at home.
