You are not a dog

Some Mondays I dread more than others. It is always hard to get back into the work week after a fun weekend, but I was particularly not looking forward to today because I had been summoned for jury duty. Until today I have never had to report for jury duty, but from what I gathered by talking to those who had, it didn’t sound like a fun experience. I was at the Hall of Justice bright and early this morning armed with two books and my computer to help keep me busy and entertained while I waited to see if I would be selected for a jury.

While I was serving my jury duty, I spent some time searching for a quote to use for this weeks Monday Motivation and during my search I stumbled upon this quote:

Dont reward yourself with food quote

I started laughing as soon as I saw it because I do this all of the time.

Run 6 miles and enjoy a huge plate of french toast from Cody’s La Jolla (which, by the way is the best french toast I have ever had).

Go for a hike and enjoy a large ice coffee with vanilla powder from The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.

Complete a strength training workout and enjoy a bagel and cream cheese with bacon (this also happens to be my cure for hangovers).


And I can go on and on. To be honest, sometimes when I have a reward in mind it helps motivate me to push through a challenging workout or is my incentive to do something active on the weekends instead of sitting on the couch. Although I think the quote is funny, it is something that I obviously don’t follow in my own life. I don’t think there is anything wrong with rewarding yourself with food as long as you are thoughtful about it. The key is to find a balance and strategy that works for you.

The first time I trained for a half marathon I used food as my rewards for completing runs a little too often, which I think was the culprit for why I gained a few pounds while I trained. This time around I am still using food as rewards during my training for the La Jolla Half Marathon, but only for completing  long runs and I am incorporating other types of rewards in as well.

Sometimes my reward for working out hard or challenging myself is just knowing that I pushed myself and I made it through. Last Saturday Ray and I ran 9.5 miles and I completed it in one hour and thirty minutes, which is an awesome pace for me. We ran the middle part of the La Jolla Half Marathon course, which included the Torrey Pines Monster Hill (~1 mile at a constant 10% grade – and this is just one of the hills featured in the La Jolla Half Marathon).

When I finished I couldn’t help but think about how far we had actually run and how far I have come since we first started training. Just the idea of running up the Torrey Pines Monster Hill made me nervous and was enough of a reason for me not to do the race.  With a little time and work I have started to tame the Monster and I am feeling confident that I will be able to run the entire half marathon at my desired pace.

Stitch Fix is Pretty Cool

I have been having some issues with shopping lately. My weekends have been pretty busy leaving me with little time for shopping and I am having a difficult time finding pieces that I love that also fit.  My recent shopping excursions have been centered on trying to find clothes for work and a few new sweaters for fall and winter, but I was not having much luck. Every time I went into a store I felt like I either found a few pieces I liked but not loved, the clothes didn’t fit quite right, or I already had a similar item at home. When it comes to picking out clothes I tend to gravitate toward the same items, which is why my closet is full of grey and black sweaters and jeans. I will also be the first to admit that I don’t have an amazing fashion sense or style. I have a hard time creating outfits and sometimes I buy clothes, but don’t know how to pair them with pieces already in my wardrobe.

I first heard about Stitch Fix  through a few of the blogs I read, Carrots ‘N’ Cake and The Fitnessista, and it instantly peaked my interest given my recent shopping failures. Stitch Fix is an online personal shopping service that selects and sends you 5 pieces of clothing (they also have accessories) right to your doorstep.

If you haven’t heard of Stitch Fix before, here is how it works:

1) Create an account and answer a few questions about your clothing sizes, your clothing preferences, and price point.

2) Schedule a fix. Pick the date you want your fix to arrive from their online calender.

3) Pay $20 per fix. If you buy any piece from your fix, the $20 is applied toward the cost of that item. If you buy all 5 items you get 25% off your entire purchase.

5) Try on your items and decide what you want to keep. You have three business days to decide what you wish to keep/return.

6) Using a prepaid USPS mailer return the items you don’t want.

On Monday, I came home to my first Stitch Fix box. It was so nice having something to open in the mail that wasn’t a bill or junk mail! stitchfix box

Each fix includes a styling card for every piece that your stylist picked out for you. The cards give you suggestions on how to wear each item. All in all I really enjoyed my first fix. The jeans fit great and are super comfortable and the sweaters could all be transitioned from work to going out. If I would have seen the sweaters/tops in a store I don’t think I would have thought to try them on. It was also nice to be able to try on the clothes at home and see if they worked with my wardrobe.  There is nothing worse than buying something at a store and then getting home and discovering you don’t have anything to wear it with.

I was a little concerned about how the clothes would fit, but all of the items in my fix fit me really well. My stylist stuck to the clothing preferences and sizes I entered on the inital survey. My only fit issue is with the jeans because they are long and need to be hemmed.  I am still deciding on what pieces I am going to keep. All of the items were in my price point range and the jeans were the most expensive item at $88.00. The sweaters and tops ranged from $38.00 to $68.00.

I really appreciate the flexibility that Stitch Fix offers and that you can control how often and when you want to  schedule a fix. Their calender does book up fast so be sure to take that into consideration if you are trying to schedule a fix for a certain occasion.  I think Stitch Fix is a great if you need some new items for a season or just want to mix up your wardrobe a little. I  definitely recommend giving Stitch Fix a try and will be scheduling another fix!
